Start with a cool rinse

Take the pair off after a cycle day or overnight wear and rinse it under cold tap water. Squeeze the water through the gusset with your palms until the runoff runs clear. Avoid wringing the fabric like a rope, which pulls at the flatlock seams and stretches the leg bands out of shape.

A small wash basin works well if you prefer to soak them for twenty minutes before the laundry cycle. Keep the water cold. Warm water can set stains into jersey knit before the detergent ever touches the fabric.

Machine washing in a mesh bag

Toss the rinsed pairs into a mesh wash bag to keep the elastic waistbands from twisting around heavier items like towels or denim. Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and standard laundry liquid. Powder detergent is fine if it dissolves fully in cold water.

Skip fabric softeners, laundry conditioners, and chlorine bleach entirely. Softeners leave a waxy film over the knit that stops the lined panel from drawing in moisture during your period. Bleach weakens the plant-derived cellulose strands and makes the elastane brittle over time.

Why line drying matters most

Hang the pairs up to air dry in a spot with decent airflow. Turn them gusset-side out over a drying rack or clothesline so the thickest part of the sewn-in panel dries at the same pace as the outer body. Direct sunshine is fine, though indoor drying works well too.

Tumble dryers are hard on the inner membrane of the gusset. High heat shrinks bamboo knit faster than cotton and breaks down the elastic threads woven into the waist. Leaving them flat to dry preserves the cut and keeps the edges from rolling up.

Building a steady weekly rotation

A rotation of six or seven pairs wears much longer than two pairs washed and dried every other day. Fabric needs rest between wears to regain its recovery stretch. Spreading the wear across several pairs gives the gusset seams time to relax and dry thoroughly without rushing the laundry.
